Product DescriptionProduct OverviewTypes of BentoniteCharacteristics Mud bentonite, also known as drilling fluid bentonite, is a clay mineral primarily composed of montmorillonite. When mixed with water, it forms a highly viscous, colloidal suspension (mud), which plays an irreplaceable role in fields such as drilling and underground engineering.Its key properties include: high water absorption, swelling capacity, thixotropy, suspension ability, binding capacity, and cation exchange capacity.1.Sodium Bentonite:High swelling capacity, high yield, good suspension, low fluid loss. Product ApplicationsProduct FunctionsSlurry Making & Viscosity EnhancementBentonite particles disperse in water to form a colloidal suspension, significantly increasing the viscosity of the mud, ensuring its ability to carry drill cuttings.Wall Stabilization & Borehole Integrity:The mud forms a thin, tough filter cake on the borehole wall, sealing pores and preventing fluid invasion into the formation, thereby stabilizing the wellbore and preventing collapse.Cuttings Transport & Suspension:The high-viscosity mud transports rock and drill cuttings generated during drilling to the surface. It also effectively suspends cuttings when circulation stops, preventing them from settling and burying the drill string.Filtration Control:High-quality bentonite forms a dense filter cake, minimizing the filtration of water from the mud into the surrounding formation, maintaining mud performance stability and protecting the formation.Cooling & LubricationTransmitting Hydraulic PowerDuring drilling, the high-speed friction between the drill bit and rock generates enormous heat. If this heat is not dissipated promptly, it can cause the drill bit tip to anneal, soften, wear out rapidly, or even fail, and also lead to the failure of seals. It can also affect the strength and service life of downhole tools. Bentonite mud, as a circulating medium, flows through the drill bit nozzles and inside/outside the drill string. Like a coolant, it continuously carries away the substantial heat generated by the drill bit. The heat is then dissipated naturally in the mud circulation system (e.g., in the mud pits), allowing the drill bit to operate within a safe temperature range.1. Between the drill string and the wellbore wall: Bentonite particles in the mud form a smooth, low-friction liquid film on the surfaces of the drill string and the wellbore wall. This significantly reduces the frictional drag and torque during drill string rotation and tripping operations, lowers power consumption, and prevents the risk of the drill string getting stuck (known as "differential sticking"). 2. Between the drill bit and the rock: This lubricating film also helps reduce direct friction between the drill bit teeth and the rock surface. Although rock breaking primarily relies on impact and crushing, lubrication minimizes unnecessary energy loss and wear.
