Urea is one of the simplest organic compounds and serves as the primary nitrogenous end product of protein metabolism in mammals and certain fish. It can be utilized as fertilizer, animal feed, explosive material, adhesive stabilizer, and chemical raw material. The substance derives its name from its presence in the urine of Homo sapiens. As a neutral fertilizer, urea is suitable for various soil types and plants. It is easy to store, convenient to use, and causes minimal damage to soil, making it one of the most widely used chemical nitrogen fertilizers. Urea contains 46% nitrogen (N), the highest nitrogen content among solid nitrogen fertilizers. Industrially, urea is synthesized from ammonia gas and carbon dioxide under specific conditions. Application Fields Medical Field In dermatology, certain medications containing urea are used to enhance skin moisture. For example, non-surgical nail removal employs occlusive dressings containing 40% urea. #### Helicobacter pylori Detection [5] Helicobacter pylori produces highly active urease, which catalyzes the decomposition of urea into ammonia gas (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2). By labeling carbon or nitrogen atoms, the production of CO2 and NH3 can be visualized to determine the presence of Helicobacter pylori. The same principle can also be applied to test for similar bacteria inhabiting the stomachs of animals.In the field of animal husbandry, urea is produced in large quantities at low cost and serves as an important non-protein nitrogen feed. In 1891, Morgan et al. discovered that urea could be synthesized into protein by microbial action in the rumen of ruminants, thereby reducing the need for protein feed and making it suitable as a feed additive for cattle and sheep [8]. Urea is also one of the key approaches to achieving the reduction and substitution of soybean meal in ruminant diets and has been included in China's first catalog of feed additives. Urea feed offers the following advantages [9]: (1) **Substitutes for part of soybean meal and lowers feed costs.** Urea can replace 20%-30% of crude protein in cattle and sheep diets. Urea contains 46.7% nitrogen, which is 6.8 times that of soybean meal (soybean meal contains only 6.8% nitrogen). This means that for every ton of urea nitrogen used, 6.8 tons of soybean meal nitrogen can be saved. Based on urea priced at 1,800 yuan/ton and soybean meal at 4,500 yuan/ton, this substitution can reduce feed costs by 12,000 yuan. (2) **Avoids occupying limited arable land resources.** Urea is an industrial product primarily synthesized from byproducts of coal or natural gas, eliminating dependence on arable land. Moreover, replacing 10 million tons of soybean meal with urea would free up 100 million mu of farmland. (3) **Exhibits unique nutritional properties.** Urea is a natural nutrient in dairy cows, as rumen microbes can utilize it to synthesize microbial protein, which accounts for 60% of metabolizable protein. The amino acid composition of microbial protein is superior to that of soybean meal, making it a high-quality protein source. **Toxicity:** Urea itself is non-toxic, but when hydrolyzed by urease in the rumen, it releases ammonia. If the released ammonia exceeds the concentration that rumen microbes can utilize, the excess ammonia combines with carbon dioxide to form ammonium carbamate, which quickly enters the bloodstream and causes poisoning. Additionally, a significant amount of ammonia is absorbed through the rumen wall into the bloodstream. When blood ammonia concentration surpasses the liver's detoxification capacity, ammonia poisoning occurs. Symptoms typically appear within 30-60 minutes after ingestion, ranging from sluggish movement and lethargy in mild cases to limb convulsions, rumen bloating, and dyspnea in severe cases. Without prompt treatment, affected animals may die within 2-3 minutes. The simplest and most practical emergency measure for urea poisoning is to administer a 5% acetic acid solution or vinegar to the affected animal. Acetic acid not only neutralizes excess ammonia and ammonium ions in the rumen but also effectively breaks down ammonium carbamate, thereby mitigating toxicity.Industrial Sector (1) Urea can be extensively used as a raw material for producing various products such as melamine, urea-formaldehyde resin, hydrazine hydrate, tetracycline, phenobarbital, caffeine, Vat Brown BR, Phthalocyanine Blue B, Phthalocyanine Blue Bx, monosodium glutamate, and more. (2) Urea enhances the polishing effect in the chemical polishing of steel and stainless steel, serves as a corrosion inhibitor in metal pickling, and is also used in the preparation of palladium activation solutions. (3) It is used as a selective reducing agent for denitrification of combustion exhaust gases [8]. The sources of denitrification reducing agents mainly include liquid ammonia, ammonia water, and urea. Liquid ammonia can directly produce ammonia gas but is classified as a Class B hazardous material, requiring special safety measures. Ammonia water and urea can indirectly produce ammonia gas, with urea being a stable, non-toxic solid material. As an ideal source of ammonia for denitrification, it is harmless to Homo sapiens and the environment, allowing for bulk transportation and long-term storage. (4) Used in automotive urea [10]. The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology route utilizes a urea solution to selectively catalytically reduce nitrogen oxides in exhaust gases, converting them into non-polluting nitrogen and water, thereby reducing NOx emissions and meeting the restrictions on PM and NOx under the National IV emission standards. For the skin, urea has moisturizing and softening effects on the, preventing clogged pores and thereby improving acne issues. It can be added to products such as facial masks, toners, creams, and hand creams as a moisturizing ingredient. (6) Applications in the textile industry. Laboratory Applications Urea can effectively denature proteins, particularly by disrupting non-covalently bonded proteins. This property enhances the solubility of certain proteins, with concentrations reaching up to 10 moles/volume. Urea can also be used to produce nitrourea. Storage Improper storage of urea may lead to moisture absorption, caking, or liquefaction, affecting its original quality and causing economic losses. Proper storage methods include: - The issues of caking and liquefaction are closely related to transportation, storage conditions, and weather, often occurring during high-temperature periods like summer or during autumn when temperature fluctuations coincide with rain. - Reducing the bagging temperature of urea and storing it in dry, well-ventilated areas can mitigate these issues [12]. - Ensuring urea bags are intact and well-sealed minimizes environmental moisture ingress. - During transportation, protect against rain; during rainy days, cover with waterproof tarps when loading/unloading. - After storage, when humidity normalizes, remove tarps for ventilation and moisture dissipation. - For large-scale storage, place wooden supports about 20 cm high underneath, leaving at least 50 cm of space between the top and the ceiling for ventilation.
