Product Description Introduction The Battery Fire Exposure Test Machine is designed to evaluate the fire resistance performance of the complete REESS against exposure to fire from outside. It simulates the fire caused by a fuel spill from a vehicle and evaluates the time that if the driver and passengers have enough time to evacuate.The exposure to fire test shall be conducted with the complete REESS or with its subsystem(s) which can represent the performance of the complete system in the end use.The test includes 4 procedures: A) Preheating; B) Direct exposure to flame; C) Indirect exposure to flame, and; D) End of test.Phase A PreheatingThe fuel in the pan is ignited for 60 seconds, and the tested REESS is placed on the carrier which is 3m out of the burning pan.Phase B Direct exposure to flameThe carrier with the tested REESS moves horizontally to the burning pan, and the tested REESS is directly exposed to fire for 70 seconds. The exposure time can be with additional 60 seconds as requested.Phase C Indirect exposure to flameThe refractory brick carrier with a layer of refractory bricks moves to between the burning pan and the tested REESS carrier, and the tested REESS is exposed to the reduced fire for 60 seconds.Phase D End of testThe extinguishing screen is moved between the burning pan and the refractory brick layer, and the flame is extinguished. The tested REESS is continuously observed until the surface temperature of the REESS cools down to ambient temperature or a period of 3 hours.The exposure to fire test system comprises a fuel pan, sample(REESS) carrier, extinguishing screen carrier, refractory brick carrier, tracking system, fueling system, ignition device, and control system, which can auto/manual perform the exposure to fire test according to ECE R100 Rev. 3 Annex 9E.Standards:ECE R100 Rev.3 Annex 9ERevision 3 of UNECE Regulation No. 100 requires a certain number of tests to be carried out by manufacturers of rechargeable battery systems found in electric motor vehicles. These tests are intended to ensure the safe operation of rechargeable batteries under the intended conditions of use, and to provide a greater level of safety for drivers and passengers of vehicles.These tests include battery fire tests.Verification of the fire behavior of Lithium batteries in case of fire from outside the vehicle.Driver and passengers must have enough time to evacuate the vehicle.UL 2580 Battery Test MethodsSouthwest Research Institute (SwRI) is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and staffed by experts in energy storage safety to perform all the below UL 2580 tests as well as customized developmental testing. The UL 2580 standard was established to evaluate the safety of lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles (EVs). The comprehensive suite of tests encompasses various aspects such as electrical, mechanical, thermal and environmental evaluations. SwRI can perform all the below tests from UL 2580 and can assist clients with developmental testing if modifications to the test standard are desired.Procedure of the battery fire test according to annex 9E ECE R100 Rev3 / 8A ECE R100 Rev2The battery is subjected to a direct sheet fire for 70 seconds Then, the battery is exposed to an indirect fire for 60 seconds (interposition of a firebrick screen).The battery is supervised until it cools down (or 3h)Main Features:1.Fuel pan, made of stainless steel. Provides three different dimensions for various size samples.a) 3,200mm(L) x 2,200mm(W) x 150mm(H).b) 2,200mm(L) x 1,200mm(W) x 150mm(H).c) 1,200mm(L) x 700mm(W) x 150mm(H).Other dimensions of fuel pans can be customized.2.The fuel pan is mounted on the left/right side of the system.3.The Battery Fire Exposure Test is equipped with water, gasoline filling device to fill water & fuel into the pan according to the test. The filled gas can be enough for a specific exposure time.4.Sample carrier, can be moved horizontally upon the fuel pan, at a rate of up to 6 m/min, with a loading capacity of up to 2000kg and a maximum sample dimension of 3000mm x 2000mm.5.The sample carrier height can be adjusted to 500mm ± 100mm higher than the fuel level.6.Refractory brick carrier, can be moved horizontally upon the fuel pan, at a rate of up to 6 m/min.7.Refractory bricks are mounted on the carrier, the refractory brick is 240mm(W) * 120mm(D) * 70mm(H), with 15 holes of 30mm diameter and 6 cutouts of 30mm diameter are thought the brick.8.The refractory brick has the following properties:a) Fire resistance performance: SK 30 (Seger-Kegel).b) Material: 30~33% Al2O3.c) Open Porosity: 22~22%.d) Density: 1,900~2000 kg/m3.e) Effective Holed Area: Approx. 44.18%.9.The refractory brick carrier height can be adjusted higher than 30mm ± 10mm the fuel pan.10.Extinguishing screen carrier, can be moved horizontally upon the fuel pan, at a rate of up to 6 m/min, made of a steel sheet, used to extinguish the flame after Phase C.11.The movement of each layer is remote control, which has auto and manual modes.12.The movement of each layer is within physical and software limits.13.Anemometer, is used to measure the wind velocity at pan level, with a measuring range of up to 10m/s, a resolution of 0.01m/s.14.Temperature measurements, Type K insulated thermocouples, monitoring the temperature of the surface of the sample.15.The system is equipped with a video monitoring system to record test procedures as well as remote operations.16.Data acquisition system, collects the data of voltage, temperature, speed, time, etc.17.Window based software, with manual & auto modes, controls the movement of each layer.
