The point of the pick can easily be placed on the part of the specimen that you want to test. The scratches that you make or trails of metal that are left behind are usually very easy to distinguish.Like use a pencil on the hand, with the ground into a 45 degree angle. Then, with the same pressure as writing, drag the point over the surface of the specimen. Examine the test site with a hand lens to see the results of your test.We have used hardness picks and think that they do a great job. They are easier to use and more accurate than testing with specimens. They can be resharpened when they dull.
