Product Description Product DescriptionBasic InformationPropertyDetailsStandardASTM A268. This standard specifies the requirements for seamless and welded stainless steel pipes for general service.MaterialStainless steel. It contains elements such as chromium, nickel, and molybdenum, which provide corrosion resistance and other excellent properties.TypesThere are several grades, including TP410, TP430, TP304, TP316, etc. Each grade has different chemical compositions and properties to meet various application requirements.Mechanical PropertiesStrength: Stainless steel pipes under ASTM A268 have good strength. For example, the TP304 grade has a minimum yield strength of 30,000 psi and a minimum tensile strength of 75,000 psi. This enables them to withstand different mechanical loads in various applications.Ductility: They also exhibit excellent ductility, allowing for easy forming and bending during the manufacturing and installation processes. The high ductility helps prevent cracking and ensures the integrity of the pipes.Chemical CompositionChromium: The chromium content in ASTM A268 stainless steel pipes is typically in the range of 11% - 30%. Chromium is a key element that forms a passive oxide layer on the surface of the steel, providing excellent corrosion resistance.Nickel: Nickel is often present in certain grades, such as TP304 and TP316. It helps to improve the toughness, ductility, and corrosion resistance of the stainless steel, especially in reducing the risk of stress - corrosion cracking.Molybdenum: Some grades like TP316 contain molybdenum, usually in the range of 2% - 3%. Molybdenum enhances the corrosion resistance of the steel, particularly in harsh environments and against pitting and crevice corrosion.ApplicationsChemical Industry: ASTM A268 stainless steel pipes are widely used in the chemical industry for transporting corrosive chemicals and fluids. Their excellent corrosion resistance ensures the safe and reliable transportation of various substances.Food and Beverage Industry: In the food and beverage industry, these pipes are used for handling food - grade liquids and gases. The stainless steel material is hygienic, easy to clean, and meets the strict requirements for food safety and quality.Pharmaceutical Industry: They are also employed in the pharmaceutical industry for processes involving the transportation of drugs and other pharmaceutical products. The corrosion - resistant and clean - able properties of the stainless steel pipes are crucial in maintaining the purity and integrity of the products.HVAC Systems: In heating, ventilation, and air - conditioning (HVAC) systems, ASTM A268 stainless steel pipes are used for transporting refrigerant gases and chilled water. Their resistance to corrosion and ability to withstand different temperature and pressure conditions make them suitable for these applications.Manufacturing ProcessSeamless or Welded: ASTM A268 stainless steel pipes can be produced by either seamless or welded processes. Seamless pipes are made by piercing and drawing a solid billet, resulting in a pipe with a continuous structure and high strength. Welded pipes are fabricated by welding a strip of stainless steel into a tubular shape. The welding process can be either electric resistance welding (ERW) or laser welding, depending on the specific requirements.Surface Treatment: After manufacturing, the pipes may undergo surface treatment processes such as polishing, pickling, and passivation. Polishing gives the pipes a smooth and shiny surface, which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also helps in reducing friction and improving the flow of fluids. Pickling and passivation are used to remove impurities and enhance the corrosion resistance of the surface by forming a more stable passive oxide layer.AdvantagesExcellent Corrosion Resistance: The stainless steel material used in ASTM A268 pipes offers outstanding corrosion resistance in a wide range of environments, including those with high humidity, acidic, or alkaline conditions. This property significantly extends the service life of the pipes and reduces the need for frequent maintenance and replacement.Hygienic and Cleanable: Stainless steel is non - toxic and easy to clean, making it ideal for applications in the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries where strict hygiene standards are required. The smooth surface of the pipes prevents the accumulation of dirt, bacteria, and other contaminants, ensuring the purity of the substances being transported.High Temperature Resistance: ASTM A268 stainless steel pipes can withstand high temperatures without significant loss of strength and dimensional stability. This makes them suitable for applications in industries such as power generation and heat treatment, where they may be exposed to elevated temperatures.Good Formability and Weldability: The stainless steel used in these pipes has good formability, allowing it to be easily bent, shaped, and fabricated into various configurations to meet the specific requirements of different applications. Additionally, it has excellent weldability, enabling strong and reliable joints to be made during installation and construction. ASTM A268 specification covers standard specification for a number of grades of nominal-wall-thickness, welded ferritic and martensitic stainless steel tubing for general corrosion-resisting and high-temperature service.ASTM A268 tubes shall be made by seamless and welded process with no filler metal added. As a final heat treatment ASTM A268 Tubing shall be reheated to temperature of 1200°F [650° C] or higher and cooled to meet the requirements of specification.SS 410 Welded Tubes stainless steel is soaked at 649-760°C (1200-1400°F) and then cooled in air.Shielded fusion and resistance methods are recommended for welding grade Stainless Steel 430 Seamless Tubes stainless steel.Oxyacetylene welding is not suitable for this stainless steel grade.Hardening of ASTM A268 tp439 Seamless Tubing is controlled by the use of 405 Cb electrodes that contain columbium.Ductility of AISI 405 Seamless Tubes is maximized by post weld annealing.ASME SA268 Stainless Steel 409 Welded Tubes are soaked at 817-871°C (1500-1600°F) and the temperature is then increased to 1038-1121°C (1900-2050°F). ASTM A268 Stainless Steel 429 Seamless Tubes can be hardened by soaking at 982-1010°C (1800-1850°F) and then oil quenched.
