Product Description Vinyltrimethoxysilane is a vinyl-functional silane featuring a reactive methoxy group, primarily employed as a crosslinking and grafting agent in the manufacturing of XLPE cables and pipes. Its versatility extends to its ability to be grafted onto various polymers, including polyethylene and polyesters. The presence of the methoxy group also renders it suitable for use as a water scavenger in coatings and adhesives applications. Furthermore, it is commonly utilized in conjunction with amino silanes in the synthesis of MS polymers. Siwin-V31, Vinyltrimethoxysilane, serves as an excellent alternative to Momentive Silquest A-171 or Dynasylan VTMO within this capacity. This process results in the formation of a polymer with pendant trimethoxysilyl groups, which may be utilised as moisture-activated crosslinking sites via hydrolysis of the alkoxy groups, followed by condensation of the resulting silanols.Crosslinking of Silane-Grafted PolymersThe reaction of silane-grafted polyethylene to form a crosslinked or vulcanized polyethylene utilises water to form the crosslinks. This technology is widely employed around the world for commercial applications in wire and cable insulation, tubing, and other analogous applications. The fundamental reaction sequence is as follows: polyethylene is reacted (grafted) with vinyltrimethoxysilane, using a peroxide initiator, in an extruder. The grafted polyethylene is then formed into a finished product, such as cable jacketing, wire insulation, or pipe. The forming step is usually conducted by a second extrusion, during which a catalyst for the moisture-cure step is added. Finally, the formed article is exposed to moisture or hot water, which causes hydrolysis of the silane and condensation to form crosslinks via Si-O-Si bond formation.
