Product Description SubstancesChemical nameCommon names and synonymsCAS numberEC numberConcentrationLithium bromideLithium bromide7550-35-8231-439-8100%Lithium bromide is a colorless crystalline substance that appears granular. It is stable in the atmosphere and does not decompose, evaporate, or deteriorate. It is non-toxic (with a sedative effect) and does not irritate the skin. It is hygroscopic and has a slightly bitter taste. Its melting point is 547°C, boiling point is 1265°C, relative density is 3.46425, and refractive index is 1.784. It dissolves in methanol, ethanol, amyl alcohol, glycerol, ethylene glycol, acetone, ether, many organic acids, esters, and other organic solvents but does not dissolve in liquid bromine and cannot form polybromides. It has strong hygroscopic properties and easily dissolves in water, forming various hydrates: LiBr·H2O, LiBr·2H2O, LiBr·3H2O. At room temperature, it exists as a dihydrate, which is a white crystal. It loses one molecule of crystallization water at 44°C and becomes anhydrous above 160°C. Its aqueous solution is neutral or slightly alkaline. It has great corrosive effects on general metals. The main measures for corrosion prevention are maintaining high vacuum to isolate oxygen and adding corrosion inhibitors, ensuring the solution temperature does not exceed 120°C. Hot concentrated solutions can dissolve cellulose. In the air, when heated strongly, it decomposes significantly, releasing bromine and producing small amounts of lithium carbonate and lithium oxide, showing alkalinity. In its molten state, it strongly corrodes glass, porcelain, and platinum. It reacts with gaseous ammonia to form LiBr·nNH3. Production method: It is obtained by direct combination of lithium and bromine, industrially produced by dissolving lithium carbonate or monohydrated lithium hydroxide in freshly prepared hydrobromic acid. Applications: More than 50% lithium bromide solutions are used in air conditioning equipment as moisture absorbers and low-temperature heat exchange media, also used for drying acidic gases, petroleum dehydration, and in small quantities in the pharmaceutical industry.
