Product DescriptionOverviewCharacteristics Foundry bentonite is a high-quality natural clay mineral specifically used in the metal casting industry, with montmorillonite as its primary mineral component. It acts as a binder in the casting process and is the core ingredient for preparing "green sand." Bentonite itself does not provide refractoriness; its core value lies in its ability, when combined with water, to impart strong binding properties to otherwise loose sand grains, thereby forming a plastic and strong sand mold.Base Preparation: Mixed with base sand, water, and additives (e.g., coal dust) to form green sand with plasticity and strength.Molding and Pouring: Used to create precise mold cavities, capable of withstanding the static pressure, erosion, and thermal shock of the molten metal, preventing mold deformation, cracking, or sand erosion.Shakeout and Reclamation: After the casting solidifies, most of the bentonite-bonded sand (return sand) is reclaimed through shakeout. In the sand preparation system, adding a small amount of new bentonite compensates for the portion deactivated by heat, restoring its properties for the next cycle.Binding Property: When mixed with water, bentonite forms a colloid that effectively binds silica sand grains together. This is its most fundamental characteristic.Plasticity: It enables the molding sand to be shaped into complex mold geometries and retain that shape.Green Strength: It provides the green sand mold with sufficient strength after molding and before casting to prevent damage during pattern removal and handling.Dry Strength: After water evaporates, bentonite provides higher strength, which is important for some dry sand molds or skin-dried molds.Thermal Stability: Under the heat of molten metal, bentonite helps maintain the stability of the sand mold for a certain period, preventing premature collapse.Collapsibility: After the casting solidifies and cools, the sand mold bonded by bentonite should break down easily to facilitate shakeout and cleaning. Reusability/Durability: This refers to the ability of bentonite to retain its binding properties after multiple cycles of sand reuse. Its primary application is in the preparation of "green sand," which is a mixture of base sand (typically silica sand), bentonite, coal dust (or other additives), and water, blended in specific proportions.Foundry bentonite is the "heart" of the green sand molding process. Its applications span across all areas of ferrous and non-ferrous metal casting. The selection of the appropriate bentonite directly determines the quality of the sand mold, the yield rate of castings, and production costs, from simple hand molding to highly efficient automated production lines.Product FunctionsBinder for Sand Matrix:Binder for Sand Matrix: Its core function is to bind dispersed base sand grains into a strong, plastic whole (the sand mold) to form the cavity for the casting.Enhancing Mold Stability: By providing green, dry, and hot strength, it ensures the sand mold maintains dimensional stability and integrity during molding, closing, pouring, and solidification, preventing defects like sand erosion, scabbing, and mold enlargement.Controlling Moisture and Permeability: The colloidal nature of bentonite helps distribute moisture evenly and influences the permeability of the molding sand, thereby reducing the occurrence of gas-related defects.Affecting Casting Surface Finish: High-quality bentonite helps form a dense and smooth mold cavity surface, resulting in castings with a good surface finish.Economy and Environmental Friendliness: Particularly, sodium bentonite with high reusability can significantly reduce the consumption of new sand and binders and minimize waste sand disposal, aligning with the requirements of green foundry practices.Sodium Bentonite (Na-Bentonite):Calcium BentoniteActivated Bentonite:Origin: It is typically naturally occurring but can also be produced by treating calcium bentonite with sodium carbonate (sodium activation).Key Properties: High swelling capacity, high dry compressive strength, high hot wet tensile strength, and good reusability (high durability).Origin: It is naturally abundant and very common.Key Properties: Slow water absorption, low swelling capacity, weaker binding force, and poor reusability (low durability).Origin: It is processed from calcium bentonite.Key Properties: Its performance is intermediate between calcium bentonite and high-quality sodium bentonite, making it a cost-effective alternative.Packaging & ShippingCompany ProfilePurey Tech is a trading company specializing in the export of bentonite products.
